The Fountain of the Mascheroni
The Fontana dei Mascheroni is located at the beginning of Viale XX Settembre and is a modern fountain. It was built in 2004.
The fountain represents a double-faced Roman god, Janus. In the center of the basin there is a pillar on which the two faces of the god Janus are located. Stones are also set on the pillar and jets of water come out of the mouths of the two faces.
The fountain was built following a redevelopment project on Viale XX Settembre. It is modern in style and has been criticized by the citizens for its style and for the polished aluminum with which the faces of the god Janus were built.
Janus is the god of beginnings, both material and immaterial, and is one of the oldest and most important divinities of the Roman, Latin and Italic religion. It is usually depicted with two faces, since the god can look at the future and the past but also because, being the god of the door, he can look both inside and outside.
