Fontane a Trieste
The Ponterosso fountain

The fountain was known as the “Giovanin” by the street vendors of fruit and vegetables and by the florists who once populated the square and decorated it with flowers on St. John's Day.

The fountain is by Mazzoleni and is from 1753. The statue of the putto, called “Giovanin” because the water came from the source of San Giovanni, is from 1761 and is due to Giovanni Carlo Wagner.

There are many stories about the care that the vendors of the square had towards this putto: Ruaro Loseri in her Trieste guide tells that they dressed him in black cloths when King Umberto was killed.
