The Fountain al Cantico dei Cantici

In the center of Piazza Oberdan there is an ellipsoidal flowerbed with a fountain above which is placed the monument to the Song of Songs, by Marcello Mascherini, better known to the people of Trieste as the "Fidanzatini" statue.
The popular name is due to a fact that actually happened during the Second World War, usually remembered during the Memorial Day.
On March 19, 1945, 22-year-old Pino Robusti waits for his fiancée in the square, when he is stopped and arrested by the SS, probably because he was considered absent from forced labor at Todt, and taken to the Risiera di San Sabba.
On April 5 he wrote a letter tracing the events and his feelings.
